Jordan Szoke, on the Mopar Express/Hindle/BMW S1000RR, swept the Mopar Pro Superbike class with two first place wins.
Szoke clinched the hole shot in Race 1 and kept the lead for the entire 22-lap race, crossing the line 11.09 seconds ahead of runner-up Kenny Riedmann, on the Sturgess Cycle/Liqui Moly/Hindle/Kawasaki ZX-10R. After battling for second place with Riedmann, Bodhi Edie, unfortunately crashed his Z1 Tuning/Parts Canada R1 out of third place at the end of the last lap.
"Because of the way you have to set up the motorcycle here, because it is so bumpy, you can't really slow down too much," said Szoke about the rough AMP track surface. "The bike wants to beat you up... so you've got to push the whole time here. I'm just as exhausted now as if I was battling someone, but I can't complain. Obviously we had an amazing setup right out of the box."
The last podium spot was taken by Scot-Build/Hindle/BMW S1000RR rider Ben Young, who claimed third after Edie's last-minute crash. "There just were not enough laps today," said Young, who got pushed back early in the race and fought his way up to the podium. "Maybe tomorrow I can get a better start and get a good race pace going, try to make some changes to the bike to make it better."
In Race 2, Kenny Riedmann, on the Sturgess Cycle/Liqui Moly/Hindle/Kawasaki ZX-10R, held off Szoke for a short time, until Szoke took the lead in turn 2. Szoke maintained the first place spot, while the battle for second, third and fourth included top runners Riedmann, Edie, and Young.
"I was spent. I'm not gonna lie," said a visibly fatigued Szoke during the podium presentation. "It's the most physically demanding track we go to in North America, for sure. You're white-knuckling it the whole time... it might look easy, but it's definitely not."
Riedmann and his Sturgess Cycle/Liqui Moly/Kawasaki ZX-10RR looked strong in the opening laps, but couldn't keep pace with Szoke in the long run and settled for second. "I felt a lot more comfortable at the end of the race," said Riedmann, commenting that a new fuel map and shock setting smoothed the bike out for Race 2.
Young closed the gap on Riedmann in the final laps, but settled for third place due to a red flag. "We tossed away the 'A' bike this morning, and unfortunately it hit the wall and was too bad to recover for the race. It was unfortunate the red flag came out, because I caught Kenny and I didn't want to show him what I had. I wanted to save it for the end, because I knew he would come right back. Unfortunately it ended the way it did," explained Young.
In the Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike class, Frank Trombino, on the Prostar/Hindle/Honda CBR600RR held onto the top podium spot in Race 1 right from the start. Tomas, on the Peterborough Cycle/Hindle/Yamaha YZF-R6 battled for 2nd with fellow Yamaha rider Mitch Card. Unfortunately, Card crashed in turn 3 and was unable to continue the race, giving Casas the 2nd spot on the podium. The 3rd spot went to Caleb Noiles, from Salisbury, NB.
"Hats off to this ProStar Honda; it did a fantastic job and the pit crew did amazing. We worked so hard - thank you so much, guys," said Trombino on the podium.
Unfortunately, Trombino was unable to race in the Liqui Moly Pro Sportbike Race 2 due to a previous crash in the Mopar Pro Superbike Race 1.
Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike top runners Casas and Card battled back and forth for the win during the entire Race 2. Card led early in the race, but Casas overtook after a few laps and led to the half way mark when Card put his YZF-R6 back in front. Tomas then made a bold pass with only four laps to go and was able to hold off Card to take the win by a mere 0.025 seconds.
"Right from the start, going into turn 1 we were both trying to see who would hold onto the gas longer," said Casas after his third win of the year. "I really hope the crowd enjoyed it, because it was back-and-forth; I was losing a bit of pace at the end, struggling in the back (area) of the track, and I knew Mitch was going to come back on the final straight. It was a close race, but man oh man, was it fun."
Jacob Shaw-O'Leary, the local track favorite from Falmouth, N.S., grabbed the 3rd spot up on the podium.
The next round of the 2017 Canadian Superbike Series takes place at the famous Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly Mosport) in Bowmanville, Ont., August 18-20. This double header round is a popular one, as record attendance of fans and motorcycle enthusiasts come out to support the top Canadian Superbike racers.
