The long road to recovery: endless doctor appointments, scans, tests, and readjusting life to allow for as much recovery as quickly as possible. With a head injury, the recovery time varies and it is near impossible to predict how long you will be unfit to ride. I spent days and days inside a hyperbaric chamber to increase the oxygen flow in my body and speed up recovery.

By now, most people know I had a serious accident at the Suzuka 8-Hour World Endurance Event in Japan back in July. I high-sided my Superbike coming onto the front straightaway, which was targeted to be my fastest lap ever around the Suzuka Circuit. I was pushing hard and still had a heavy fuel load, with tires that were still not fully up to temp. Although I don’t remember any part of the accident, a photo sequence (see later in the story) along with onboard data allowed my team to piece it all together.

From Team Penz13.com - The Penz13.com BMW road racer Dan Kruger (Montreal, QC) was set to take part in this year’s 8 hours of Suzuka FIM Endurance World Championship race for another team but has asked his friends of his road racing squad to spread this press release and update on his conditions after crashing during yesterday’s free practice sessions with the intention to stop rumours.
The Canadian highsided during yesterday’s second free practice session and got injured. This is what he wrote from hospital this morning.
“I had a bad crash and will not be racing in the 8 hours of Suzuka," said Kruger. "I’ve got a punctured lung, damaged ribs, my right hand, a broken collarbone and some head injuries that are still (being) evaluated at the moment. I am in ICU at the Suzuka hospital. I was unconscious after the crash but I am already recovering. I am not on life support and I am breathing on my own and I am 100 per cent ‘there’ – I am quite certain I will recover fully.”
Team Penz13.com BMW Racing wishes it’s mate Dan all the best and a speedy recovery. We all hope to see you back on the bike at Frohburg later this year in September!
Inside Motorcycles also wished Dan a full, proper recovery.

Montreal's Dan Kruger has been everywhere, riding everything, in 2014. From the Pan Delta Superbike Championship in China to the North West 200 and Isle of Man in the UK to races in Japan and Australia, and on Kawasaki, BMW and Yamaha machinery, Kruger's had a busy year. To add to this, the international traveller will enter the famous Macau Grand Prix when he partakes in the 2014 running of the dangerously entertaining road race, held November 13-16.

I don’t always think everything through. Usually everything works out, which is precisely why I continue to make decisions without really thinking of all the possible outcomes. My wife Holly has been to plenty of my races around the world and, more recently, so has my baby Kaitlyn. Having them at the Isle of Man was critical as you are on the island for two full weeks between practice and racing, so there is a lot of downtime. It is also a very stressful two weeks as the risks are high and bad news is unfortunately common. Being around those that you love is very important. It is a little tougher with the baby, since babies aren’t known for their patience, and race events are known for their delays and questionable weather (especially the TT!).

I have been very fortunate these past few years with the numerous opportunities I have been given. Participating in the Suzuka 8 Hour endurance race was no different. Or was it? No point keeping you in suspense — I will tell you now that it was different in a big way! It was the first event where I really felt the pressure to ride well, be a team player, and always be available for no matter what was asked of me. The fact that I was doing all this racing for the fun of it meant nothing to my team and the many sponsors behind the team. They were doing this full-time and it was their job.

July was a busy month. First I spent a week in Japan testing for the Suzuka 8 Hour Endurance race. I had a crash, but I also learned the circuit with respectable lap times, came to terms with the challenging Yamaha R1 powerband, and started coming to terms with the special 'Suzuka' Dunlop tires (I use the term started lightly!).

Canadian racer Dan Kruger has withdrawn from the 2014 Tourist Trophy races at the Isle of Man out of respect of his late teammate Simon Andrews. Kruger had to face a couple of things during the days before and during the TT, as it was only one week before that he was at Simon’s side when he passed away after his bad crash at the North West 200.

I arrived on the Isle of Man from my race in the Czech Republic (see Part II of my Isle of Man blog) and hopped in my rental car. My phone GPS wasn’t working, so I was using an actual paper map to find my hotel. Yes, they still offer paper maps in some parts of the world.
